Henry John Hunwardsen was born November 12, 1872 at Schleswig-Holstein, Germany; son of John and Mata Thomsen Hunwardsen.

At the age of 12 years he came to America with his parents and the family lived on a farm in Jones County.

On April 23, 1907, he was united in marriage with Christina Johansen and this union was blessed with 7 children. Mrs. Hunwardsen passed away in 1921.

Mr. Hunwardsen was engaged in farming until 1926 when he began to work for the North Western Railroad--he retired in 1942. The family lived in the Clarence community for 44 years.

Mr. Hunwardsen passed away at the home of his daughter on Monday, March 18th, 1957, having reached the age of 84 years, 4 months and 6 days.

He leaves to mourn his passing the following children: John and Herman Hunwardsen, of Clarence, Henry Hunwardsen Jr., of Lisbon, Mata Behrend and Clara Westcott, of Clarence and Hazel Hackert, of Cedar Rapids. Also 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by one son, Martin.

Funeral services were held at the Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, 1957, with Rev. Edward J. Bowers, pastor of St. John's Evangelical and Reformed Church conducting the service. The music was furnished by Mrs. Anna Klatt and Mrs. Arthur Claney with Mrs. J. B. Lane as organist.

Interment was made in Mayflower Cemetery at Oxford Junction, Iowa.
