George Hegarty was born March 30, 1880, near Harmony Point, in Cedar county, Iowa, on the farm where he lived most of his life. He was the son of Robert L. and Martha Jane (Wareham) Hegarty. He attended school at Harmony Point and Oak Hill.

On January 1, 1914, he was married to Ruth E. Rhodes. They purchased the family farm and made their home there until February, 1944, when they moved to Tipton.

Mr. Hegarty was a member of the Mt. Hope Lodge A.F. & A.M. of Clarence and also of the Order of Easter Star Chapter of Clarence.

During the war he served on several civilian service committees in the county.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Tipton, and was ordained as an Elder in the Presbyterian Church in 1947.

He passed away on May 15, 1959, at the age of 79 years, 1 month and 15 days. He is survived by his wife Ruth, his brother Grant Hegarty of Tipton; three sisters, Jessie Hegarty, Tipton, Mrs Belle Schulse of Des Moines and Mrs. Myrtle Bixler of Clarence; also many nieces and nephews.

George Hegarty's many friends knew him as a man of honesty and integrity, a faithful friend and a good neighbor.

Memorial services were held at the Dye funeral home in Tipton on Monday afternoon, May 18th, 1959 at 2:00 o'clock, with the Rev. Howard Dukelow officiating. Mrs. C. P. Christiansen, organist, accompanied Mrs. F. N. Fraseur, vocalist. The casket bearers were: Richard Dircks, Robert Lacock, Max Crawford, Carr Todd, James Stafford and Charles Thomson.

Interment was in the Tipton Masonic cemetery where Masonic services were conducted by Mt. Hope Lodge of Clarence.
