On Sunday, Sept. 13, Grandpa Schroeder was taken away from his dear ones by death.

Johann Heinrich August Dethlof Schroeder was born on March 30, 1835 at Wotenitz, near Grevismuchlen, Mecklenburg, Schwerin, Germany. Here he learned the wagonmaker's trade.

On Nov. 8, 1867, he was married to Miss Henriette Huebner. To this union was born two boys and one girl, but one boy, Henry died when three years old.

In 1883 he left the fatherland and came to Milwaukee, Wis., where he stayed till 1887. He then came to Iowa, into the neighborhood of Clarence. After this he lived for many years four miles north of Bennett. From 1904 until his death he lived on his son's place four miles southeast of Clarence.

Deceased was a faithful Christian of kind disposition and was well liked by everyone.

Besides the afflicted widow and two sorrowing children, William Schroeder and Mrs. William Krafack, and eleven grandchildren, deceased leaves two brothers and one sister in Germany to mourn over his death.

For the last years deceased had been failing in health, but it was not till a month ago, when his condition became alarming and hopeless. Cancer of the stomach caused his death. He was 77 1/2 years old when he died.

The funeral took place on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Services were held in the M. E. church at Clarence, at 1 o'clock p.m. Rev. Hansen officiating.

The remains were laid to rest at the Clarence cemetery.
