19 July 1912 - The Lowden News

Last night at 9:15 o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George F. Steffens occurred the death of their son, George. The young man had been sick about a week, heat exhaustion was the cause of his death. He came home one day last week having worked on the farm helping his brother Ed. Monday night he became worse and for the past few days had been very low that an end was expected soon. He was a young man of 18 years, 9 months and 18 days.

Funeral will be held Sunday forenoon at 10 a.m. in the house (the usual hour for Sunday morning services) with funeral services in the Evangelical church. More complete obituary next week.

26 July 1912 - The Lowden News

Deep sorrow came to Geo. F. Steffens and family for death shadowed their home by taking away from them their beloved son and brother, George. A short but very painful ailment took the young man over yonder to the shining shore, where neither pain, sorrow or death can enter.

George Henry Ludwig Steffens was born on October 1, 1893, on a farm west of Lowden. He was baptized on November 19, 1893, and was confirmed with his sister, Elsie, and a class of nineteen girls and nine boys in the Evangelical Zions church on Palm Sunday, April 12, 1908. Of this class he was the first one to depart from this world. He reached the age of 18 years, 9 months and 18 days, just a young man right in the prime of life.

He had always been home with his parents on the farm until this last year when they moved to town he worked for his brother, Ed, near Tipton. While working there on the farm he was overcome with the heat and failing in health and not able to work he came home for a rest. As we mentioned last week on Monday evening (of last week) he took severely sick and remained so that an end could be expected soon. On Thursday evening, July 18, at 9:15 o'clock the Angel of Death layed its icy hand upon him and took him from his home in this world to his Heavenly home.

George was a good and faithful son to his parents, a good and kind brother to his brothers and sisters, a good and true friend to his many friends.

Sunday forenoon occurred the funeral services at the house and at the Evangelical church and interment in the Lowden cemetery. Appropriate singing was rendered by the choir. The funeral attendance was very large and most solemn and sad. Extra seats had to be provided in the large church to seat all the people. Rev. Werning conducted the services which were very impressive. He had for one of the texts George's confirmation verse, Psalms 5, 12-13.

Many beautiful floral pieces were brought to the casket as a last loving tribute to the departed one.

Those who are left to mourn his early demise are: his parents, three brothers, two sisters, one sister-in-law and one nephew, Orlando Steffens. He also leaves other relatives and many friends. The pallbearers were: Emil Freese, Otto Brendes, Willie Kahl, Otto Koch, Alfred Von Roden and Willie Hartmann, all confirmation classmates of the deceased.

All here sympathize with the bereaved and grief-stricken parents, brothers and sisters, who are called upon to mourn the loss of one dear to them.
