14 October 1910 - The Lowden News

Chester L. Caldwell, who was born at Lowden, Ia., January 24th, 1884, died at the home of his parents Sunday October 9th, 1910, at 3:10 a.m., at the age of 26 years, 8 months and 15 days.

Deceased is survived by his father and mother, one sister and three brothers, namely, Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Caldwell and children, Mrs. W. H. Cole of Lexington, Nebr., Charles of Lisbon, Iowa, Herbert of Stanwood and Archie of Lowden. All the relatives named were here Tuesday attending the funeral, as were also W. H. Cole of Lexington, Nebr., Mrs. C. J. Caldwell and daughter, Bessie, and son, Herb, of Lisbon, Mrs. H. A. Caldwell and son, Earl, of Stanwood, Miss Nina Waite of Des Moines, Mrs. Minnie McDevitt of Cedar Rapids, Mr. and Mrs. Foster Orr of Clarence, etc.

Deceased was employed on the C. & N. W. Ry. as telegraph operator for the past nine years working in that capacity at Stanwood, Lowden, DeWitt and Carroll. Last named station he held his position to time of his sickness.

Chester came home about the first of August stricken with Bright's disease. Every possible thing being done for him to no avail. On Sept. 16th his brother, Herb, took him to Colfax Springs for treatment, but the disease had too strong hold on him, Chester coming home again September 28th, sinking fast from then until the day of his death.

Deceased was a member of DeWitt Lodge No. 34, A.F. & A. M., having joined four years ago, and in May, 1909, took the degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite at Clinton. He was also a member of the Ancient Order of the Mystic Shrine.

The funeral was conducted by the A.F. & A.M. Services were held in the Evangelical church at Lowden and at the Lowden cemetery with interment in that cemetery. Rev. Neal A. McAulay, D. D., Pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Lyons, Iowa, officiated. A quartet from DeWitt furnished the sweetest of songs. All of the services and ceremonies were beautiful and most impressive. Many members of the Masonic order of the Wheatland, DeWitt, Clinton, Tipton and Clarence lodges were here. The local masons belonging to the Wheatland lodge, and many other friends and neighbors were in attendance. The floral tributes were beautiful and there were a good many.

Chester was highly respected by all who knew him. He was a universal favorite with the young and greatly esteemed by the business people of this community. His death admonishes us to heed the bible injunction, that we know not the day nor the hour when we may be called home. The sympathy of the Masonic fraternity as well as that of the large circle of his acquaintances is extended to the bereaved family. May the God of all comforts strengthen and sustain them in their sore bereavement.

"When tempest clouds are dark on high
His bow of love and peace
Shines sweetly in the vaulted sky
Betokening storms shall cease
Hold on they way with hope unchilled
By faith and not by sight
And thou shall own His word fulfilled
At eve it shall be light."
