11 September 1908 - The Lowden News

Henry Butterbrodt was born on April 29th, 1839, at Lise, Westphalia, Prussia, Germany. In 1867 he came to America and arrived at Lowden on July 1st, of that year. On July 16, 1867, he was joined in marriage to Miss Louise Kroemer, his now sorrowing widow. She came also from Lise, and had left the Fatherland a couple of months sooner than Mr. Butterbrodt in company of another young lady, a cousin of hers.

The first three years of married life they resided on the Wm. Brandt farm, the place now owned by Chas. Petersen, three miles southeast of Lowden, then they moved to South Prairie, for the first few years as renters, and then they bought a farm, whereon they resided up to six years ago, when they retired from active work and moved to Lowden, here they bought a place and erected a fine new residence, a most pleasant home **** Butterbrodt's residence in Lowden of short duration.

Mr. Butterbrodt died at his home here on Tuesday, September 8th, at three a.m. of diabetes mellitus, and other complication of diseases setting in at the last. Although he had complained some of not feeling well for a year or more, he took sick and consulted a physician only about five weeks before his death, but still, he was able to be about, could eat and sleep fairly well, and he suffered hardly any pain, but the deathly disease done its work quietly but swiftly, about three days before his demise deceased became low and very weak, and he finally went to sleep without pain, quietly and peacefully.

Besides the sorrowing widow there survive to mourn Mr. Butterbrodt's demise, three sons, three daughters-in-law and twenty-one grandchildren. Two sons and one daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Butterbrodt's, died while yet quite young

Mr. Butterbrodt by reason of his long residence in this vicinity has a large circle of acquaintances and friends, and a great many relatives of his reside here. He has been, up to his retirement, a hard working and industrious man, and thus had accumulated much property. For over forty years he has been a member of the Evangelical church here. In loosing Mr. Butterbrodt Lowden's lost one of its best citizens.

The funeral was held yesterday afternoon with services in the Evangelical church. It was a great gathering of people, friends and relatives from far and near attended the services at the church, and after the services all cast a last parting look upon the kindly face of the departed. Several beautiful floral pieces were placed on and near the casket. After the services at the church they layed Mr. Butterbrodt to rest on the Van Horn cemetery. May he rest in peace.
