15 June 1917 - The Lowden News

Mrs. D. W. Baird, one of the early settlers of this section of the state, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. J. Berner, in this city last Friday morning, after a lingering illness, at the advanced age of eighty one years.

Ella Amanda Potariff was born at Clearfield, Penn., September 10, 1836, and was united in marriage to David Wilson Baird October 1st, 1860--two years after his locating at Lowden--where they lived until 1889. Mr. Baird was postmaster at that place for thirty years. From there they moved to Clarence, where their home was made for two years and in 1891 they moved to Oxford Junction. In 1901 Mr. Baird answered the Final summons, and since his death Mrs. Baird has made her home with her only daughter, Mrs. J. M. Berner, where she finished her life's work and answered the call which came last Friday morning.

Chas. Baird, of Kansas City, Mo.; and Mrs. J. J. Berner, of this city, remain to mourn the loss of their departed mother, both of whom were at her bedside when life took its departure.

The funeral services were held from the home last Sunday forenoon, conducted by Rev. Wolgemuth, and also E. A. Grimwood spoke a few words in response to one of the last requests of Mrs. Baird. The remains were then taken to the Mayflower cemetery and laid in their final resting place and the grave was covered with many beautiful bouquets of flowers, as token of the esteem in which she was held by her many friends of the sorrowing family. -- Oxford Mirror
