24 September 1909 - The Lowden News

The remains of Henry Behrend, who died at his home at Tipton last Sunday, were brought here for burial Wednesday.

Henry Behrend was born in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, on April 23rd, 1846. At the proper age he served in the German Army, and he was one of the heroes of 1870 and 1871 in the Franco-Prussian War. In 1874 he was united in marriage to his now sorrowing widow. In 1881 they came to America and have since resided in Cedar county, at first for a number of years near Lowden. Mr. Behrend had been sick for about a year, his sickness ended with his demise, as stated, Sunday, Sept. 19th. He died at the age of sixty-three years, four months and twenty-six days. There survive to mourn his demise his widow, seven sons, three daughters, two brothers, one sister, nine grandchildren and many other near relatives.

Mrs. Behrend and children, who deeply mourn the demise of a kind and loving husband and father, arrived here with his remains, and quite a number of other near relatives and friends came with them on the same train from Tipton, Clarence and other places and attended the funeral, also many friends from Lowden were in attendance. A great many beautiful floral tributes were on the casket, brought as sweet tokens of last respect. In absence of Rev. Werning, Rev. F. Rolf of Rock Island preached the funeral sermon in the evangelical church here.

Deceased was a brother of John Behrend of Fair View southwest of Lowden. Henry Behrend was a member of the Lowden Krieger Verein, members of which society and families were in fairly large attendance at the funeral. The Krieger Verein had sent a delegation to Tipton as a guard of honor to accompany the remains to Lowden. Also members of the Krieger Verein were pall bearers, namely, John Stoecker, Henry Horstmann, Diet Conrad, Peter Muhs, Henry Von Muenster and Louis Strackbein; and they laid Comrade Henry Behrend to rest in the Van Horn cemetery. May he rest in peace.
