Yesterday morning the remains of one of the oldest pioneer settlers of Cedar county was brought here for burial.

John Stuart Burwell was born in Ashland county, Ohio, July 23rd, 1828 and died at the home of his son, Lambert, in Marathon, Iowa, at the ripe old age of four score and 7 year. In 1854 he came to Cedar county and settled on a farm now owned by Chas. Gehrls. He lived there until 1884 when he and his family moved to the western part of the state. The older inhabitants will remember Mr. Burwell as a splendid character, a good neighbor, and always kind to those not having as much of the worldly goods as he possessed. He it was that deeded to the town of Lowden, free of cost, the tract of land where the Lowden cemetery is situated, reserving for himself at the time a lot to be buried upon. His wife was brought here from the western part of the state and buried in June, 1889.

The deceased was buried yesterday afternoon without funeral service. The funeral sermon having been preached at the home in Marathon. Rev. G. Leslie Farnham of the M. E. Church here saying the rites at the grave.

Mr. Burwell leaves three sons living and 15 grandchildren. The sons are Lambert of Marathon, Ame of Ainsworth, Nebr., and Charles of Inland, Nebr. Mr. and Mrs. Lambert Burwell and Charles Burwell accompanied the remains here.

Those that assisted as pall bearers were, C. H. Hansen, H. C. Northrop, D. W. Conrad, S. H. Kimball and A. P. Reid.
