24 December 1915 - The Lowden News

The course of my long life hath reached at last
In fragile bark o'er tempestuous sea
The common harbor where must rendered be
Account of all actions of the past.

Thus spoke Longfellow of the close of long life such as was favored to Thomas Monroe Bright who departed this life December 15th, at his home in Massillon aged over 77 years. A complication of Bright's disease from which he had been suffering for a week carried him away.

He was born September 20, 1838, in Bath county, Virginia, and lived there most of his younger life. In 1867 not long after his marriage he moved to Belmont county, Ohio, and later to Adair county, Iowa, in 1870; and 12 years later to Massillon where he has since resided. On February 14, 1860, he was united in marriage to Martha Jane Anthony. Five of their children have already passed to the Great Beyond, most of them in childhood. There remain to mourn the loss of an earnest father and a kindly husband his wife and seven children: Charles S. Bright, of Alexandria, Neb., C. J. of The Dallas, Oreg., Mrs. L. C. Savage of Little Falls, Minn., Asa F. and G. W. Bright of Massillon, Ira J. of Leavenworth, Kans., and Will T. of Elwood, Iowa.

"Father" Bright will be greatly missed in the community of Massillon where he was a well known figure and interesting personality.

The funeral services were held at the home and at the little church in Massillon with interment in the cemetery nearby. Rev. S. V. Williams of Olin, Iowa, a former pastor and friend, conducted the services and appropriate music was furnished by the local choir.
