10 March 1911 - The Lowden News

John J. Ackerman, the oldest resident of Bennett, and probably the oldest man in the county, died last Monday. He had lived in this county for over seventy years and was well known. He was born Oct. 6, 1819, in Wuertemberg, Germany, and came with his father to America in 1831. After brief stops in New York, Pennsylvania and Kentucky, he and his father went to Crawfordsville, Ind., where they were engaged in business for four years. In the spring of 1839 he started for Iowa which was then the far west. He crossed the Mississippi river at Rockingham, seven miles below Davenport and finally landed at Posten's Grove in Springfield township. He decided to locate in Inland twp. and was the first settler to make location in that township.

Mr. Ackerman was married in 1852 to Nancy Scarlet. She died in 1864, and four years later he married to Nancy J. ??ader. Mr. Ackerman prospered as a farmer and became one of the largest landholders in the county. He retired from active work many years ago. Kind and genial in nature he had the friendship of everyone and in later years was affectionately known as "Uncle Johnny". He possessed his faculties in a wonderful degree until the last and his health and vigor were such that all hoped he might live to round out a century of living.

Funeral will be held this afternoon with services in the church at Bennett and interment in the Inland cemetery. Deceased was a charter member of the Wheatland Masonic lodge, which received its charter in 1859, and members of that lodge will have charge of the services at the grave. Several masons from Lowden and Massillon went to attend this funeral.
