Last rites for Cyril D. Olson, 56, will he held at First United Church of Christ at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21. Mr. Olson died at his home in Tipton Monday morning, following a heart attack. He had been hospitalized at an Iowa City hospital for several weeks following a heart attack in October.

Olson was employed by the Weapons command at the Rock Island Arsenal. He served as clerk of the Cedar county courthouse from February, 1956 to September, 1967.

He is survived by his wife, the former Grace Hamilton and a sister, Mrs. Paul (LaVonne) Chapman, Clarence.

Funeral services for Cyril D. Olson, 56, former clerk of the Cedar county district court, were held at First United Church of Christ Nov. 21 with the Rev. Ernest Lauer officiating. Burial was in Van Horne cemetery, Clarence, with military rites at the graveside by Victory post of the American Legion at Clarence.

Pallbearers were Don Conrad, William Diedrichsen, Paul Thomsen, Jim Reeve, Howard Thien and Russell Chapman. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Klatt and Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Lenschow were in charge of flowers. Mrs. Merl Carroll was organist and Mrs. John Swift vocalist.

Mr. Olson died at his home in Tipton Nov. 19 following a heart attack. He had suffered a heart attack Oct. 7 and spent a month in an Iowa City hospital. He had been home for approximately 2 weeks when the second heart attack took place.

The son of Emil and Arkie Miller Olson, he was born at Tipton May 10, 1917 and graduated from Stanwood high school and Tipton junior college. He also attended the University of Iowa.

He was married to Grace Hamilton at Stanwood May 5, 1941.

Mr. Olson was a salesman and manager for motor companies and was associated with Howard Thien in the Thien and Olson Motor Sales in Clarence and Tipton before he became clerk of the Cedar county district court in February, 1956, after the resignation of John Powell. Olson served as clerk of the court until September, 1967, when he resigned to take an administrative position with the Weapons command at the Rock Island arsenal.

He served in the army from Feb. 12, 1943 to May 29, 1946, including 27 months in Europe where he took part in the Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. He was a graduate of the Officers' Quartermaster school at Camp Lee, Va. and at the end of his service in Europe was a member of the 46th Quartermaster Group. He was a motor maintenance specialist.

Mr. Olson continued his service in the army reserve as a member of the 5041st Army Reserve school at Davenport where he served as a training and administrative officer. He retired as a lieutenant colonel after more than 28 years of active and reserve service.

He was a member of First United Church of Christ, Mt. Lope Lodge No. 501, AF&AM, the order of the Eastern Star, the Iowa Consistory and El Kahir shrine.

An expert wood carver, he taught classes in the art for senior citizens and was recognized for the design and beauty of his work. He also had numerous hobbies, including the collection of coins and rocks.

Mr. Olson is survived by his wife, a sister, Mrs. Paul (LaVonne) Chapman, Clarence and a number of nieces and nephews.
