October 27, 1911 The Lowden News

John Wischmann was born October 31, 1831, at Neu Muenster, Holstein, Germany. He died at his home three and one-half miles south of Lowden, Wednesday, October 18, at the age of 79 years, 11 months and 18 days of infirmities of old age.

Mr. Wischmann came to America in 1853 coming to Moline, Ill., where he worked three years, coming to Wheatland, Ia., in 1856. He was married in 1859 to Miss Catherine Lehaun, his now sorrowing widow. After they resided on a farm near Wheatland for six years Mr. Wischmann and family came to Springfield township, Cedar county in 1865. Here they owned and resided on an 80 acre farm until 1882 when they bought 120 acres adjoining their first 80. They have since resided on and worked this 200 acre farm with the help of some of their sons.

Mr. Wischmann has been in America 58 years and of Cedar county 46 years. At one time he was, for several years, trustee of Springfield Twp. He was a loving husband and father, was rigidly honest in every deal, was a friendly neighbor and a good citizen and highly respected by all who knew him.

Mr. Wischmann was always an industrious man and kept up active work within but a few days before his demise. He was of strong constitution and never much sick during all of his almost four score years of life's journey. However, last May, Father Time began serving him with little ailments; six weeks before his death the ailments became more severe and gradually got worse, but he was down in bed only about one day when death took him, twelve days before he had completed his 80 years.

There survive to mourn Mr. Wischmann's demise his wife, six sons, one daughter and ten grandchildren. His sons are Henry, Herman, Gustav, Arthur, George and Alfred, his daughter is Mrs. Wm. Doermann; all reside here but Gustav who redies at New Liberty, Ia., and Arthur resides at Parker, S. D., all were present at the funeral. Mr. and Mrs. Wischmann had in all 12 children, five having preceeded their father to the better world.

Funeral was held Saturday with services in the Evangelical church at Lowden. Rev. Werning of Lowden conducted the services. There were quite a lot of beautiful flowers brought as tokens of last respects. The pallbearers were C. G. Muesing, Henry Wilkening, Henry Jess, Paul Paustian, Henry Klahn and David Pingel. The remains of Mr. Wischmann were laid in the family lot on the Low Germany cemetery two miles northwest of Wheatland. "Friede Seiner Asche."
