3 September 1909 - The Lowden News

Levi Van Sickle was born in Delaware county, Ohio, August 15th, 1819, and died at his home near Massillon, Iowa, August 23rd, 1909, aged ninety years and eight days.

In 1840 at the age of twenty-one, he came west, teaming to Chicago, when it was but a small village, and settled in Ogle county, Ills. He remained there three years, working at the carpenter trade. He then returned to his home in Ohio, where he married Miss Sarah Cave, September 12, 1844. Three sons, Lester, Oscar and Jasper, came to bless their union.

In 1841 they moved to Cedar county, Iowa, where their children grew to manhood, married and settled in homes of their own.

Then the cares of the farm became too much for the aged couple, and a small cottage was built near their oldest son, Lester.

Here they lived until the loving wife and mother passed away, January 1st, 1903. Since then he has lived the greater part of the time with his youngest son, Jasper, on the old homestead, where, as the sun slowly sank to rest, he peacefully fell asleep, on August 23rd, 1909. He gladly parted with this world's trials and tribulations to dwell with Him who said "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

During his long and wearisome illness he was patient and often repeated, "My work on earth is ended, I am ready and anxious to go."

For the past few months those nearest and dearest to him saw only too plainly that the "Sands of Time" were slowly but surely running out.

He was kind and considerate as a neighbor, upright as a citizen and generally loved. He was of a vigorous constitution and for most of his life knew no sickness.

He leaves to mourn his demise, three children, fifteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Of his brothers and sisters he was the last to be called except a younger sister in Michigan.

The funeral was held Wednesday with interment in the Massillon cemetery beside the wife and mother.

During the past sixty-five years, this is but the third time that death has visited this remarkable family. The aged grandmother and one great-grandchild, having died before and now the great-great grandfather has gone to rest--four generations survive to mourn his death.
