Mount Vernon - Douglas Ure Van Metre, 61, widely known banker and civic leader, died at his home in Mt. Vernon Saturday night after a long illness.

Mr. Van Metre was well known in Tipton where he spent his early years, attended school, and was a member of Tipton Juvenile Band.

He was an outstanding athlete, and popular in his school circles.

Van Metre was vice president of the Mount Vernon Bank & Trust Co., and vice president of the Lisbon Bank & Trust Co. and was a member of the board of directors of both organizations.

He also was treasurer of Cornell college and was a member of the board of trustees of the college.

Born in Tipton, he received his education in the Tipton high school, the State University of Iowa and the University of Pennsylvania. He started in the banking business in Atkins and was clerk of the Cedar county district court from 1914 to 1916.

Later he became connected with the Union bank of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and the same bank in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. He started with the Mount Vernon bank in 1920 and held various offices up to vice president. At one time he was city treasurer of Mount Vernon, commander of American Legion Post 480, president of the Lions club and the Chamber of Commerce, a past master of the Elks lodge and a trustee and treasurer of the Mount Vernon Methodist church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary, and two sons, Lieut. Douglas Van Metre, serving with the marines. *** the rest of the obituary is unreadable by the transcriber
