10 January 1908 - The Lowden News

Theodore Ewalt Spoo, infant son of Theodore and Clara Spoo, was born at Lowden, Sept. 24, 1905, and died at Valentine, Nebraska, Jan. 4th, 1908, age 2 years, 3 months and 11 days. He was taken sick about two weeks ago. Physicians were called and everything done that was possible to relieve the sufferings of the little one. For several days a slight improvement was made until last Friday night, Jan. 3rd,when a turn for the worse was noticed, which resulted in death about 10:30 Saturday morning. A few weeks ago, while playing on the floor, the child fell backward on some blocks with which he had been playing, injuring the spine. It is thought that this injury, coupled with other complications, was the cause of death.

This comes as a very sad loss to Mr. and Mrs. Spoo at this time. A little less than a year ago, Mr. Spoo with his family went to Valentine and engaged in the hotel business with his brother-in-law, Mr. Ohe. They have enjoyed the patronage of an appreciative public, who will also join in sympathy with Mr. Spoo and family in their sad loss.

A short funeral service was held at the Donober Hotel at Valentine on Saturday evening at 8 o'clock, conducted by Rev. C. E. Connell, pastor of the M.E. Church, and on Sunday morning the sorrow stricken parents and their 8-year-old daughter, Helen, and also Mrs. Spoo's mother, Mrs. H. C. Northrop, of Chicago, who had hurried to Valentine to the sick bed of her little grandson, started with the body of the little one for Lowden, and arrived here some time during the night. The remains of the little one were taken to the house of his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Reid.

The funeral was held here Tuesday with services in the M.E. church and interment in the family lot at the Lowden cemetery. Rev. Baker of Low Moor conducted the services, and four little boys were the pallbearers, namely Henry Bentrott, Lawrence Struck, Lambert Meier and Frank Lillis. Many sympathizing friends were in attendance at the funeral and many beautiful floral tributes had been brought as silent witnesses of respect and loving sympathy.

Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Spoo, the sorrowing parents, and their little ones, were Lowden residents up to Feb. 13th, 1907, when they left here for Valentine, Neb. The four grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Mathias Spoo moved from here recently to Davenport and Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Northrop also of this place have of late resided in Chicago. All were brought here together on short notice at this sad occasion. Among others from outside of Lowden, we noticed at the funeral Mr. and Mrs. V. R. Northrop and baby of Bertram, Ia., Mrs. J. W. Simmers of Cedar Rapids and Robert Safely of Mt. Vernon.
