10 January 1908 - The Lowden News

Mrs. Portewig died at her home here at 2 a.m. on January 7th, of asthma and other complications.

Charlotte Tonne was born in Landesbergen, Province Hannover Germany, on March 24th, 1844. She came to America in 1869. On March 24th, 1870, she was united in wedlock to Henry Portewig and resided since that time here in Lowden with the exception of residing for a number of years past for a period of three years on a farm near here. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Portewig, the oldest three of whom died while quite young (one however was twelve years old when she died). Mr. Portewig also preceded his wife to the better world, he died about eighteen years ago.

Mrs. Portewig had been troubled with asthma for a number of years. On New Year's Day she took sick more severely, having contracted a cold. She however did not appear to be so very sick, and her people did not think that she was to part from them so soon; only the day before her demise her symptoms appeared to them more alarming. Many of her friends in town had not heard that Mrs. Portewig was worse, and were sadly surprised on the morning of the 8th to hear she was dead.

Mrs. Portewig was a kind neighbor, lending willingly a helping hand to sickness and trouble among her neighbors; she was a good Christian woman, and a member of the Lutheran church. Her children, Mrs. Louis D. Rix and Louis and Carl Portewig, as also four grandchildren and her two sisters, Mrs. Ernsting and Mrs. Hoffmeier, survive to mourn the demise of a loving mother, grandmother and sister.

Funeral will be held this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, with services to be conducted by Rev. J. H. Brammer in the Lutheran church and interment in the family lot at the Lowden cemetery.
