25 September 1952 - The Tipton Advertiser

Nelle B. Smith, daughter of Edward and Mary Smith, was born at Lockhaven, Pa., Feb. 19, 1887.

After completing her elementary education she enrolled in the State Normal school for teachers at Lockhaven, graduating from that institution with the class of 1906. She held a Pennsylvania State Teachers certificate and taught school for a number of years, first in her own city of Lockhaven and later in Newark, N. J.

Miss Nelle Smith came to Iowa in 1922. On October 21, 1922, she was united in marriage to Bruce Hegarty. They made their home on a farm in Cedar county, near the town of Clarence. One daughter, Betty, was born to them. Mr. Hegarty passed away in December, 1928. She married Thomas Nephew on March 5, 1934 and they made their home in Tipton. Mr. Nephew passed away in May, 1948.

Nelle was actively interested in many things, including several community organizations. She united with the Methodist church. She was also a member of the Legion Auxiliary, the Rebekah lodge, and the Past Noble Grand circle of that organization. She was a good mother, a fine neighbor, and a congenial friend.

She continued to live in her home in Tipton until about a month ago, when, because of failing strength and health, she went to live at the Miller Nursing home. Here she passed away suddenly on the evening of September 16, 1952, at the age of 65 years, 6 months and 12 days.

She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Dwayne Drager, of Tipton, and by four grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Bessie Dorman lives in Detroit, Mich. Besides these there are five step-children: Harry Nephew, Tipton, William Nephew, Muscatine, Mrs. Mary Krummel, Bennett, Mrs. Anna Wilke, Louisville, Ky., and Mrs. Ruby Shank, Iowa City, other relatives and many friends who mourn her passing.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, Sept. 19, 1952 at the Sheets funeral home in Tipton with Rev. A. C. Long officiating and burial in Tipton Masonic cemetery. The Rebekah lodge also officiated with their services.
