Funeral services for S. Grant Hegarty, 96, Tipton's second oldest resident, were held at the Stanwood Methodist church at 1:30 p.m. March 8, with the Rev. Beaty McDonald officiating, assisted by the Rev. James Elvig. Pallbearers were grandsons: John, Don Jr. and Paul Hegarty, Glen Evans, Doug Moore and Wes Miller.

Mrs. John Swift was vocalist and Mrs. Ed Speer organist. Burial was in the Stanwood cemetery. The Dye Funeral home was in charge.

Mr. Hegarty died March 5 at the Utopia nursing home after a short illness.

The son of Robert L. and Martha Wareham Hegarty, he was born on a farm 4 miles south of Clarence May 15, 1868. He was educated in the Oak Hill country school.

He was married to Sara E. Ingledew in Tipton March 4, 1890. He farmed most of his life, retiring in 1946 at 78. He then moved to Tipton where he lived with his sister, Jessie May Hegarty, until her death Oct. 3, 1964. Then he moved to the Utopia nursing home.

When he was 16 he joined the United Brethren church at Fairview, later joining the Harmony Point church of the United Brethren. His church membership was later transferred to the Stanwood Methodist church.

He is survived by 3 sons, Samuel C. and Donald B., Tipton; and Harry R., Stanwood; 3 daughters, Mrs. Vera M. Smith, Estherville; Mrs. Fern A. Fisher, Tipton, and Mrs. Bessie M. Andre, Tempe, Ariz.; 21 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
