Marsha Snyder Killed While Crossing Street in Cedar Rapids Thursday

Fayette - Funeral services for Marshal Snyder, 12, formerly of Mechanicsville, were held Monday at 1:30 in the Wesleyan Methodist Church.

Marsha, daughter of Mrs. Francis Snyder, Cedar Rapids, and George Snyder of Mechanicsville was killed when she was struck by a car in Cedar Rapids Feb. 11. She had moved to Cedar Rapids recently and had previously attended Lincoln Community school.

Cedar Rapids police reported that Marsha was killed when she pushed her bike across First Avenue at 36th Street and was hit by the car driven by Claude E. Wingfield, 18 of Alburnett. Her 13 year-old brother, Ronald and a companion were with her at the time of the accident.

Officers said the children had just left Franklin school and began crossing the street after a safety patrol boy had pushed the pedestrian "Walk" button. Two cars reportedly stopped for the children, but the third ran the red light and struck the girl.

Police said that the driver of the car saw the red light and the Snyder girl, but was unable to stop. They noted that his windshield was icy and fogged at the time.

Mrs. Francis Snyder was involved in an accident while following the ambulance to a Cedar Rapids hospital. She ran a red light at 32nd Street and was hit by a car driven by Ronald Baburek of Cedar Rapids. He was treated for minor injuries and released.

Marsha Snyder, a seventh grader, was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Doctors said she died from internal injuries and shock. Police said her body was thrown about 50 feet by the impact.

Linn County Attorney's office filed charges of manslaughter against Wingfield Monday afternoon.
