Mechanicsville - Funeral services were held in the Presbyterian Church, Sunday at 2:30 p.m. for Mrs. Martha Jane Stookey with Pastor George Gallaher officiating. Music by the Presbyterian choir.

Mrs. Stookey died in St. Luke's hospital, Cedar Rapids, Feb. 11, at the age of 85.

Martha Jane Moffit was born the daughter of Alexander and Martha Poteet Moffit on Oct. 31, 1879 on a farm near Mechanicsville. She was one of 11 children but 3 died in infancy.

Mrs. Stookey was a graduate of the Mechanicsville High school and Coe College, Cedar Rapids. She received her B.A. degree in 1900.

On Dec. 2, 1902 she was married to Dr. Calvin Grant Stookey and they were the parents of a daughter.

Mrs. Stookey taught school two years at North English and 4 years at Olin. All the rest of her life she lived in the Mechanicsville community.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian church, the Priscilla Class, Mechanicsville Women's club, Evangeline Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and the Past Matrons circle.

She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Cecil (Isabelle) Smay and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers and sisters.

James High, Buell Pieper, J. C. Butler, Raymond Puffer, Don Davidson and H. C. Rinehart were pallbearers.

Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery with the Horner Funeral home in charge.
