Funeral services were held Monday afternoon, Nov. 10, for Casper A. Merritt, 70, at the Chapman funeral home and at the Methodist church, with Rev. A. D. Holtry officiating. Mr. Merritt died early Saturday morning after a brief illness.

He was born June 18, 1882, at Calamus, the son of William and Letitia Lafferty Merritt and died Saturday morning at the age of 70 years, 4 months and 21 days.

On September 30, 1900, he was married to Sadie Mae Wilson at Calamus. They came to Clarence later where he followed the barber trade for 41 years, retiring only a few weeks ago. He had held the office of justice of the peace for about 10 years, to which office he was re-elected at last election. On Thursday evening he suffered a cerebral hemhorrage in the shop where he had worked these many years. He was taken to his home but never recovered consciousness, and died early Saturday morning.

Besides his wife, Sadie, he is survived by two sons, Wayne of Clarence and Owen of Bennett, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Larson, Independence, Mrs. Gertrude Arp, Davenport, Mrs. Winifred Ackley; two brothers Carl of Downey, Calif., and Lee of Arien, Iowa. His parents and two sisters, Florence and Nellie, preceded him in death.

Burial was in the Clarence cemetery with Henry Klatt, Fred Bentrott, Henry Von Muenster, Walter Hartwig, Elmore Ruther and John Hunwardsen serving as bearers, and Mrs. Klatt and Mrs. Von Muenster in charge of floral tributes.
