29 January 1909 - The Lowden News

Hans Luettjohann was born at Rehna, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany, on Dec. 9th, 1891. Four years ago he came to America and direct to Lowden, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Luettjohann, and their other children.

Hans was full of strength and vigor, up to this winter, when he began to complain from time to time of indisposition, but was able to be about, and never was very sick. A week ago last Tuesday he was here yet at Lowden with his folks. The next day, Wednesday he took severely sick with heart trouble, and four days later on Sunday morning, Jan. 24th, at 10:30 the young man died, at the age of 17 years, 1 month and 15 days. His sorrowing parents, four sisters and three brothers survive to mourn his early departure.

Deceased worked for the past two seasons for Wm. Gehrls west of town near No. 9 school house, and had hired out for the coming season to Ernst Juehring, neighbor of Mr. Gehrls. During the winter months he was home with his parents one and one-half miles south of No. 9 school house. He was an industrious, hard-working boy. His so untimely demise came as a hard, sad blow to his people. All here sympathize deeply with the bereaved family.

Funeral was held Wednesday with services in the Evangelical church at Lowden, and interment in the Van Horn cemetery. Rev. Werning officiated.

Regardless of the bad roads, there was a large attendance at the funeral. Beautiful floral tributes decorated the casket. The funeral sermon was based in part up on the following scripture lesson.

"As for man, his days are as grass, as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.
"For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone, and the place thereof shall know it no more.
"But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him and his righteousness unto children's children.
"To such as keep his covenants, and to those that remember his commandments to do them."
Psalm C111, 15 18
