James Launtz, Long Time Resident of Tipton, Dies at Soldiers' Home In Marshalltown

James Launtz, civil war veteran, a member of the 46th Iowa Infty., died last Sunday at the Soldiers' Home in Marshalltown, where he had been taken the week previous. Practically all of his life was spent in this county and he was known to many people.

He had been in failing health for several months and recently his sons George, of New York, and Arthur, of Sioux City, came to assist their sister, Mrs. J. D. Taylor, in caring for him. His wife preceded him in death two years ago. It was decided that he could be best cared for at the Home the state has provided for its aged veterans and he was taken to Marshalltown on the Monday preceding his death.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at the M.E. church, conducted by Rev. Hudson, and the body was laid to rest with military honors in the Masonic cemetery.

James Franklin Launtz was born March 4, 1842, at Charring Cross Roads, Summerset county, Pa., and came to Iowa with his parents in 1849. He was united in marriage on Dec. 27, 1866, to Margaret Elizabeth Brown, and to this union five children were born, three of whom are still living. He has resided in Cedar Co., Iowa, since coming to Iowa, until ten days prior to his death.

He answered his country's call May 28, 1864, and served in the Union army until Dec. 23, 1864. then being discharged at the end of the war. He was a member of Company I 44th Ia. and was a member of William Beaver Post 110 G.A.R.

He is survived by two sons, George E., of New York City, J. Arthur, of Sioux City, Iowa, and one daughter, Mrs. J. D. Taylor of Tipton, Iowa.
