Glen Jones Loses Life In Quarry

The Tipton volunteer firemen were summoned Sunday evening about seven o'clock to help recover the body of Glenn Jones, 24, of Tipton who was drowned shortly before the call in the deep water at the Cedar Valley abandoned quarry southwest of Tipton. Jones, a truck driver, and Arlen Bruck of Tipton were in swimming when the former went down. Bruck attempted a rescue, but was not successful.

The body was recovered 4 hours after the drowning by the Tipton firemen. It was found on a rock ledge in 25 feet of water.

Jones came to Tipton recently from Ottumwa. He is survived by his wife. The body was taken to Ottumwa for funeral services and interment.

Jones was the third person to be drowned in the Cedar Valley quarry in the past 16 years. Roger Morton, son of Mayor and Mrs. J. E. Morton of Tipton, drowned in the same quarry 13 years ago. Sixteen yeas ago Lawrence Depping was drowned in a quarry hole south of that in which Morton and Jones lost their lives.
