21 November 1902 - The Lowden News

Ernst Huelse died Nov. 17th at the home of his son, Dietrich Huelse, five miles northwest of Lowden. For about three months he had been afflicted with a cancer of the stomach, getting gradually worse but had been down only a week before his demise. It finally got so bad that his stomach refused all nourishment and death came to him no doubt as a welcomed visitor. Wednesday he was buried in the Lowden cemetery aside the remains of his wife who died ten years ago. The funeral services were held in Werning's church but were conducted by Rev. Herrmann of Clarence of whose church deceased was a member. Wm. Ibsen, John Klatt, Chris Hansen, Richard Muhs, Louis Wenndt and Henry Mente were the pall bearers and regardless of the muddy roads it was a very large funeral procession and many of our town people who had not been to the house, helped to swell the large audience in the church.

Mr. Huelse was born Sept. 6th, 1835, at Estorf, Amt Nienburg, Prov. Hannover, Germany. In 1858 he joined in marriage the lady with whom he now rests side by side in mother earth. They came with their children to America in 1884 and for the first six months resided here in Lowden, for the next year they rented a farm and then purchased the farm now owned by their son Dietrich.

Deceased was one of those good, kind and friendly souls with whom all people who met him made friends at first sight. Thus his friends were many, and all are sorry that this disease took him away from them so rapidly. Those who mourn the loss the most are his four children and their families, namely: his sons Henry and Dietrich, and daughters Lena, wife of Ernst Hasselbusch, and Louise, wife of Henry Ernsting, and also his eleven grandchildren and his only surviving sister, Mrs. Diet Debner, and clear across the water in Germany, his only brother living. Let us remember that it is but a question of time that we all shall be called away to meet those near and dear to us, who have gone before and who may yet follow us.
