17 August 1917 - The Lowden News

Anton Friedrich Hoeltke was born on the 20th day of September, 1842, in Wietersheim, Kreis Minden, Germany. In the year of 1865 he immigrated to America, settling at first near Indianapolis, Ind., where he worked as farm hand for about three years, after which he worked in the city of Indianapolis for about one year. He became dissatisfied with the working conditions and small wages at that time and like a good many of our pioneer settlers struck out for the western countries, arriving here in 1869. He was united in marriage on the 14th day of November, 1869, to Miss Sophie Marie Woebking. To this union were born six sons, Anton C., of Lowden; August and Herman, of near Lowden, Charles of Benton City, Wash., William of Reed, Oregon and Fred, whose address is unknown. In the autumn of 1876 they purchased the farm just 1 mile east of town and lived their until his death. On February 6, 1900, his wife died. In the following year, 1901, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Sophie Cassier. His second marriage was of a short duration and his wife was laid to rest on May 8, 1913. Since that time he has made his home with his two sons, August and Herman.

Since last spring Mr. Hoeltke had been failing in health, which was noticed by his friends here, but nevertheless, he made his regular trips to town most every day. About a week ago he grew worse and on Sunday, August 12, at 10:50 a.m. he passed away, death being caused from a complication of diseases, anaemia, asthma, etc.

Mr. Hoeltke was a man of good disposition and character, a kind neighbor and will be greatly missed by his many friends here.

Mr. Hoeltke was a beneficiary member of Kelly Fish Camp, 1235, M.W.A., and also a member of the Mason lodge at Wheatland.

He was a member of the school board for a number of years and also served on the township board of trustees. In 1910 he visited his native country Germany and spent about three months there.

He leaves to mourn his death six sons, one stepson, two stepdaughters, one grandchild and a large number of other relatives.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock at the home, followed by services in the Evangelical church rooms, Rev. J. Riechardt officiating. Those who acted as pallbearers were Kossuth Pauls, Henry Mente, M.H. Curtis, August Meyer, J. H. Andresen and Chas. Reinking.
