Veteran Of Civil War Passes Away At His Home At Clinton, Iowa, After A Long Illness

The death of N. D. Henry, a resident of Iowa since 1848, occurred at 10 o'clock Monday evening at his residence, 214 Ash St., Clinton, following a long illness, resulting from a paralytic stroke suffered about five years ago. Mr. Henry was a member of the M.B.A. lodge and of General N. B. Baker post, G.A.R.

Mr. Henry was born in Licking county, Ohio, July 27, 1844, and in the autumn of 1848 came to Iowa, traveling overland with an emigrant train and crossing the Mississippi river at Lyons. He settled first in western Jackson county and later removed to Lowden in Cedar county. There he was married in 1867 to Miss Elizabeth Parr, who survives him.

At Lowden he was postmaster for ten years and was station agent for the North-Western railway for a number of years. He was also interested in the lumber business and later in a general store. When 19 years of age, Mr. Henry walked twenty miles to enlist in Company F, Eleventh Iowa infantry, and served for three years, taking part in the battle of Lookout Mountain. He then returned to Lowden and a number of years ago removed to Clinton.

In addition to the bereaved wife, the following sons and daughters survive: Mrs. Geo. Cameron of Olin, L. L. Henry of Clinton, J. D. Henry of Lowden, J. E. Henry, Mrs. Geo. Salzer, Ethel and Hazel Henry of Clinton. Two brothers, Rev. John Henry of Crescent City, Okla., and A. J. Henry of Deer Lodge, Mont., also survive.

Yesterday was the funeral with services in the Bowman M. E. church at Clinton and interment in the beautiful Springdale cemetery. There was a large attendance. The members of the G.A.R. had charge of the funeral. Services were very impressive and were conducted by Rev. S.V. Williams, Rev. T. P. Potter and Rev. J. H. Meyer. The floral tributes were a great many and most beautiful. The many Lowden friends of Mr. Henry deeply sympathize with the bereaved family.
