4 December 1908 - The Lowden News

Mathilda A. Bennett was born on July 22nd, 1833, at near Buffalo, N.Y. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. V. A. Bennett, and family, later moved to Illinois. In 1852 they came to Iowa residing for the first eight years near Oxford Jct. and in 1860 they came here to Lowden.

Deceased was married to C. H. Hansen on Oct. 6th, 1881. They have resided in this town since. Mrs. Hansen died at Chicago, Saturday morning, Nov. 28th at 1:30 of pneumonia at the age of 75 years, 4 months and 6 days.

On Saturday, Nov. 14th, Mr. and Mrs. Hansen went to Chicago to visit with her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Northrop, and other relatives, about a week later Mrs. Hansen took sick, going downward rapidly. A physician, trained nurse and the relatives did all that could be done, but of no avail, death took her hence, and Saturday evening Mr. Hansen and Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Northrop arrived here with her remains. Deceased was quite sick for a while last winter, since when she had never fully regained former health and strength, so she was not able to long withstand the attack of a violent disease this time.

The sorrowing husband, two sisters, one step-son, three step-daughters, and their families, quite a number of nephews and nieces, and a great many other near relatives and friends, survive Mrs. Hansen to mourn her demise.

Mrs. Hansen was a member of the M. E. church, and remained faithful to the last; she was devoted to all church interests, always being present when possible at the business and devotional meetings. She gave for the support of the ministry with her heart, and was hospitable to ministers and their families.

The funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon by the pastor Rev. A. M. Jayne, assisted by the presiding elder, Dr. J. B. Albrook, of Mt. Vernon. The latter spoke touchingly of her devotion to church duties and the work of the Lord. The sermon was preached by her former pastor, Rev. S. V. Williams, now of Camanche. He dwelt upon the virtue of faithfulness exhibited in her deeds, and paid tribute to her worthy character. Mrs. Hansen will be missed by a large circle of friends. A very large attendance was present at the funeral services in memory of the deceased and the beautiful floral offering showed the affection in which she was held.

Mother Hansen was laid to rest in the Lowden cemetery on the family lot. May she rest in peace.
