15 April 1910 - The Lowden News

Quite a number went from here to Clarence yesterday to attend the funeral of Mrs. Henry Horstmann. Floral tributes were sent by the Lowden Deutschen Krieger Verein and by Kelly Fish Camp No. 1235 M.W.A, of which societies Mr. Horstmann is a member. We copied the following obituary of yesterday's Clarence Sun:

Lena Bruhn was born on July 24, 1860, in Loewitz, near Rehna in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Germany.

In 1887 she was united in marriage to Heinrich Horstmann at Hamburg, coming to Cedar county, Iowa, with her husband and five children, in 1892. This spring they moved from their farm in Massillon township to Lowden.

Deceased leaves to mourn her loss, besides her husband, four daughters: Mrs. Anna Hack of Massillon township, Mrs. Emma Goldsmith of Clarence, Misses Minna and Auguste at home. Her son, Charlie, met with an accident and died in September, 1907. She also leaves two brothers and two sisters in the old country and one brother, Joachim Bruhn in Springfield township and one sister, Mrs. Elsie Freitag, in Massillon township and four grandchildren.

She was sick about three weeks and was taken to St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids on April 2, where she died at 8:30 a.m., April 12, 1910. The remains were brought to Clarence to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Goldsmith yesterday morning.

Funeral services are being held at St. John's church this afternoon, being conducted by the pastor, Rev. E. Hansen. Remains to be laid to rest in the German cemetery.
