Final rites for Bret Coleman Mathews, 73, were held at the Sheets and Son funeral home Dec. 24, with the Rev. E. H. Lauer officiating. Burial was in the Tipton Masonic cemetery.

Pallbearers were Bernard Achenbach, Louis Hartman, Ray Potter, George Brown, Rudolph McNee and Keith Conner. Mr. and Mrs. Everett Ferguson were in charge of flowers. Mrs. Max Phelps was organist.

Mr. Mathews died at his home near Mechanicsville Dec. 21, following a heart attack.

The son of Thomas Edgar and Leota Hill Mathews, he was born at Tipton March 30, 1894 and was educated in the rural schools of Cedar county.

He was married to Hazel Wierengo at Mechanicsville Feb. 18, 1920. He was a veteran of World War I.

A farmer most of his life, he had lived in the Mechanicsville area for many years.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 309 at Mechanicsville.

He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. John (Elaine) Hoy, Mechanicsville and 2 sons, Robert, Waterloo and Thomas, Phoenix, Ariz.; 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Also 4 brothers, William, Tipton; Mason, Detroit, Mich.; Herbert, Sacramento, Calif. and Charley, Pasadena, Calif.
