Final rites for Charles R. (Charlie) Willey, 85, Cedar county sheriff for 16 years, were held at the Sheets and Son funeral home Dec. 24, with the Rev. Eugene Miller officiating. Burial was in the Tipton Masonic cemetery.

Pallbearers were Dean Handley, James Walton, George Lemkau, Bill Fields, Forrest Argo and M. W. Daugherty. Ernest Werling and Mrs. Lucile Mowry were in charge of flowers. Mrs. Irma Crawford was organist.

Masonic services were held at the funeral home Dec. 23. The flag was presented by the Garey-Whalen Post of the American Legion.

Mr. Willey died Dec. 21 in Veterans hospital, Iowa City. He had entered the hospital Dec. 16 after he became ill. Death was due to pneumonia.

The son of Harmen George and Emma Dewey Willey, he was born at Inland Oct. 28, 1882 and was educated in the Bennett schools. He played baseball for teams in the Bennett and Tipton area for many years and was also a golfer, playing last summer.

He worked as a carpenter in the Tipton area for many years and was elected Sheriff of Cedar county in 1942. He served as sheriff until 1958 when he retired.

He was married to Blanche Henderson at Cedar Rapids Aug. 21, 1912. The Willeys had been Tipton residents for 55 years.

He was a veteran of the Mexican Border campaign and of World War I. He was a member of the Tipton American Legion and a 50 year member of Cedar Lodge No. 11, A.F. & A.M.

He is survived by his wife, 3 sisters, Belle Willey, Newton, Mrs. Don (Etta) Armstrong and Mrs. Wilbur (Pearl) Donohue, both of Tipton. He was preceded in death by 3 sisters.
