18 October 1918 - The Lowden News

Forest Fisher was born in Springfield township, Cedar county, Iowa, March 31, 1894, where he spent all his life until he was called to serve his country Sept. 4, 1918. He was a quiet boy and very fond of his home. He attended Sunday school and church as much as possible. When God called him he was ready to go. He died at American Red Cross Base Hospital, Camp Dodge, Iowa, Oct. 9, 1918, aged 24 years 6 months and 7 days.

Forest Fisher was a private in Co. 48, 163 Depot Brigade, New Camp Dodge.

He was a fine young man devoted to his home and much beloved by all who knew him. He was a fond and loving son, a devoted brother and a true friend and possessed the principles of true manhood. When called to the colors he cheerfully responded and was ready to serve his beloved country in any capacity. Like all others he hoped to return after the war to enjoy his friends again and to live a life worthy of the land he would have defended, but in this he was disappointed as he was doomed to make the supreme sacrifice of his life for others. He is gone but not forgotten.

He leaves to mourn his loss, his father and mother, sister Esther, two brothers, Homer and James Jr. and a host of relatives and friends.

"Your place is empty, You have gone away.
Oh, how we miss you every day.
Tears fill our eyes to see your empty chair,
And folded carefully away the clothes you used to wear.
How empty seems the house; our hearts so sore;
For, oh, the place that knew you will know nevermore.
Your place is empty. How our sad hearts yearn,
If that could only be for your return.
God give us grace and strength, our faith and hope renew,
For you will not return to us, but we will go to you."

Services were held at the home of his father, James Fisher, Sunday afternoon with interment in the Clarence cemetery. Rev. S. S. Smith officiated. The relatives present were: Mr. and Mrs. S. G. Hegarty and family of Stanwood, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Peters and family of Clarence; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Herr and family of Wilton, Miss Addie and Miss Jessie Hegarty of Tipton, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Bixler and family, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Hegarty and Bert Young of Clarence, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Fisher and family of Lowden.
