Soldier Home On Furlough Dies At Home Near Bennett

Hold Last Rites for Sgt. Glen E. Flenker At Church In Bennett

Bennett - Funeral services for Sgt. Glen E. Flenker, who died Saturday from a bullet wound in his head inflicted while he was believed by his family to have been at target practice at his home, were held at 2 p.m. Monday afternoon at the Methodist church in Bennett.

Sgt. Flenker, the son of John and Kate Schmidt Flenker was born July 3, 1921, south of Dixon. He was educated in Dixon schools, and after moving to New Liberty, in the school at Bennett. He was graduated from Bennett high school in 1939. He was engaged in farming with his father and entered service Dec. 7, 1942. He received his training at Camp Claiborne, La., at Camp Howze, Tex., and in New Jersey.

Sgt. Flenker went overseas in October, 1944 and served in France, Germany and Austria with Patch's Seventh army where he was awarded the ETO ribbon; three battle stars and the good conduct ribbon.

Surviving are his parents, two brothers, Melvin and Harlan; four sisters, Laverne, Janice, Ethel Jean and Elaine, all of near Bennett.

The Rev. Mt. Latta, pastor of the church, conducted the services and the Bennett post, American Legion, was in charge of military rites. The bearers were Marland Buttolph, Henry Belter, Jr., Norman Reginniter, Delmar Rosenbach, Raymond Harmsen and Wallace Engle. Burial was in the Inland cemetery.
