J.E. Chamberlain, Printer-Publisher Dies at Iowa City

Everett Chamberlain, 72, a printer and editor for more than half a century and publisher of The Tipton Advertiser for 44 years, died at 6 p.m. May 9 at Veterans hospital, Iowa City.

Mr. Chamberlain had been ill for more than 3 years. He was hospitalized for several months in Cedar Rapids and entered Veterans hospital at Iowa City early in March.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Methodist church. Visitations may begin at noon today at the Dye funeral home.

The son of William L. and Agnes Kramer Chamberlain, he was born in Tipton March 31, 1890 and spent his entire life, with the exception of military service in World War I, in Tipton.

When he was a high school student he began to learn the printing trade, starting with Sherman Yates and Harry Ripley on The Advertiser. After his graduation from high school in 1908 he entered the printing trade with Yates and Ripley.

He worked as a printer until shortly before World War I when he served as deputy clerk of the district court.

He entered military service July 15, 1918 at Camp Dodge and served overseas from Sept. 15, 1918 to May 31, 1919 with the army of occupation in Germany. Part of this service was with Co. C, 314th Field Signal Battalion. He was discharged Sept. 15, 1919.

Following his discharge from the army he and his brother, Forest, purchased Ripley's half interest in The Tipton Advertiser and, in 1926, they purchased Yate's interest. They continued as co-publishers of Iowa's oldest weekly newspaper until 1940 when Forest Chamberlain sold his interest to Everett Chamberlain.

Mr. Chamberlain was married to Anita Gertrude Oppermann June 29, 1921 at the home of her parents in Cedar Rapids. Mrs. Chamberlain was associated with her husband in the publication of The Advertiser until it was sold to The Tipton Newspapers in 1962. Mrs. Chamberlain died Oct. 13, 1966.

One of the oldest printers in Iowa in length of service, Mr. Chamberlain was also one of the veteran publishers of Iowa, having been active in the management of The Advertiser for 44 years.

He is survived by 2 sisters, Mrs. Dawson (Blanche) Powers, Tipton, and Mrs. Eva Pirie, Mt. Vernon and 2 brothers, Ralph, Kenosha, Wis. and Forest, Tipton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, a sister, Mrs. Charles (Mildred) Powers and a brother, Walter.
