13 May 1918 - The Lowden News

Clarence Sun - Maria Sophia Wilhelmina, wife of Fred Edler, second oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dietrich Helmold, was born Oct. 5, 1873, at Leese, Amt Stolzenau, Hannover. When she was still a child, in 1878, her parents immigrated to this country, taking up their abode on a farm south of Lowden at first and later in the neighborhood of Clarence. Here she grew up to womanhood, attending the public schools, receiving her religious instruction at Lowden, where she was confirmed in 1887. In her, her mother found an always cheerful, never tiring assistant in the discharge of the many obligation incumbent on a large household, until on April 19, 1895, she left the parental home to preside over a home of her own. On that date she solemnly promised to be a true and loving wife to the man of her choice, Fred Edler. And nobly did she through all the succeeding years redeem her pledge. Her husband's comfort and encouragement, the happiness of the increasing family daily was her one great care. As a brave woman she always thought of herself last.

Ten children were born to them. To bring them up and to tend to her household duties at the same time seems to be an almost superhuman task, requiring the strength of a giant, the endurance of a seasoned soldier, the patience of an angel. Yet she performed this task unflinchingly, delicate and fragile though she was. Every hour and every need found her ready at her post.

As year followed year, the burden was lightened. Both husband and wife hopefully and expectantly looked forward to a time not very far distant in which they could rest from their labor and enjoy the fruits of a life time of hard work. Man proposes, but God disposes. The cough, which troubled the always busy housewife at times, the growing feebleness, was at first not thought to be alarming. A time of complete rest would help her to recuperate. When the true nature of the malady made itself manifest; tuberculosis, it was too late for any human means to save her. Though mercifully spared great pains, she daily grew weaker. The end came Thursday night. She simply fell asleep. Her age was 44 years 6 months and 20 days. Funeral services were held on Sunday at the home and at St. John's church and the remains tenderly laid to rest at St. John's cemetery.

Those that are left to mourn her demise are, the husband, ten children: Otto, Malinda, Ella, Martha, Alma, Fred, William, Velma, Elmer, Paulina; the parents Mr. and Mrs. D. Helmold; four brothers, Henry, Louis, Fred and Otto Helmold; five sisters Carolina Syring, Emma Gaedelman, Ida Conrad, Amanda Conrad, Augusta Bergman with their families, two uncles Hy. Wilkening and E. Helmold.

May she rest in peace.
