31 May 1918 - The Lowden News

Mrs. Anna L. Caldwell, the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Slaughenhaupt, was born at Tarrytown, Maryland, on May 15, 1842, and departed this life May 23, 1918, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. H. Cole, in Lexington, Nebraska, aged 76 years, and 8 days.

She came to Iowa with her parents in 1850 and settled near what is now this town of Lowden. The family endured all the hardships incident to those pioneer days and she was witness of the great many changes which have taken place in the development of Iowa.

In 1859 she was united in marriage with Alexander Caldwell and to them was given a wedded life of more than fifty-five years, all of which was spent at Lowden until her husband's death on November 22, 1914.

To them were born nine children, three of which, two daughters and a son, died in infancy, and two sons, Archie and Chester, and one daughter, Mrs. Alice Waite, passed into the great beyond after reaching maturity.

There survive of the family Mrs. Emma Cole of Lexington, Neb., Charles J. of Chicago and Herbert A. of Clarence; who mourn the departure of a mother whose love for her children knew no bounds. Also she is survived by one sister, Mrs. A. J. Ducker of Dennis, Kansas, and a brother, Jacob Slaughenhaupt, of Wray, Colo., and eight grandchildren.

The remains were taken to the old home town of Lowden and there on Saturday funeral services were held at the Methodist church, conducted by Rev. M. G. Nies, pastor of the Presbyterian church of Clarence, and beautiful and appropriate music was furnished by the choir of the same church. The abundance of beautiful floral tributes were ample testimony to the love and esteem in which Mrs. Caldwell was held by her many friends. Following the services interment was made in the Lowden cemetery beside those of her family who have gone before.

Those beside the immediate family from other places who were present at the services were: Dr. and Mrs. M. C. Tilden, Mrs. Chas. Spear and J. G. Walker of Stanwood; Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Davis, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Kelly, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Clute, Mrs. E. R. Struck, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Smith, S. L. McLeod, John Greig, Jr. and Mrs. C. A. Seaton, Misses Lena Baker and Alberta Hoyman, Clarence; R. E. Walker, Clinton, and Chas. Reid of Tipton.
