Last rites for Fred W. Hinkhouse, 82, prominent Cedar county farmer and cattle feeder, were held June 27 at the West Branch Friends church, Dr. Duane Moon, president of William Penn college, Pella, officiated. Burial was in the Springdale cemetery.

Mr. Hinkhouse died at Wilton Junction nursing home June 24, following a long illness.

Fred W. Hinkhouse, son of Rufus W. and Anna Smiley Hinkhouse, was born Feb. 19, 1886, near Wilton Junction. His entire life was spent in Cedar county, the family having moved to a farm northeast of West Liberty during his school years. He finished high school at Springdale in 1906 and further his education at the University of Iowa and Iowa State College until his father offered him and his brother the opportunity to begin farming.

June 5, 1912, he married Clara L. Pearson of West Liberty and 5 years later they moved to her home farm. Here his activities grew into somewhat extensive livestock production with a desire to secure his cattle needs directly from the western ranchers. In 1928, he became a director of the First State Bank in West Branch and 10 years later was named president of the board. He continued in that capacity until his illness in 1965. He was also a director of the Springdale Insurance association 41 years and was president of that board for many years. Among other activities, he was a member of the Lions club, Cedar County Farm Bureau, the Cedar County Beef Producers for which he served a term as president, as well as holding the office of president of the Iowa Beef Producers, and actively taking part in extensive committee work for the American National Cattlemen's association. He was a participating member of the Friends church all of his married life.

Survivors include his wife; a brother, George V., West Liberty; 3 sisters, Mrs. Verda Mountain, Evanston, Ill., Dr. Myrtle J. Hinkhouse, West Liberty, Mrs. Nell Olhrich, East St. Louis, Ill.; 2 sons, William, West Liberty and Herbert, West Branch and 2 daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Towell, Edwardsville, Ill. and Mrs. Helen Mather, Albuquerque, N. M., 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
