H. Ray Challis 1884-1968

Funeral services for H. Ray Challis, 83, were held April 13 at the Red Oak Presbyterian church with the Rev. Ralph Schenck and the Rev. Louis Penningroth officiating. Burial was in the Red Oak cemetery.

Dr. C. D. Christianson was vocalist and Mrs. Max Phelps organist. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Smith and Mrs. Byron Dorcas were in charge of flowers. Pallbearers were Keith and Robert Whitlatch, Raymond and John Beckmann and Thomas and Dean Challis.

Mr. Challis died unexpectedly at his home April 10.

The son of Thomas and Sarah Goodrich Challis, he was born at Shilo, Red Oak township, Sept. 12, 1884. He was educated in the rural schools of Cedar county and the Tipton schools.

Mr. Challis was married to Leone Strauser March 23, 1910. They were the parents of a son, Donald Ray, and 2 daughters, Maxine and Winifred. He was married to Florence Thompson Arnold Dec. 12, 1927.

He was a farmer in Red Oak township for most of his life and was a trustee of Red Oak township and a past member of the Red Oak cemetery board.

Mr. Challis is survived by his wife, a son, Donald, Stanwood; 3 daughters, Mrs. Donald (Maxine) Whitlatch and Mrs. Vernon (Mary) Beckmann, Tipton, and Mrs. Ralph (Zanita) Becker, Mechanicsville; 17 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Leone, a daughter, Winifred, a sister and 4 brothers.
