Mechanicsville - Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Horner Funeral home for Howard Ellison Platner, 81.

The Rev. James Nelson officiated at the services. Pallbearers were grandsons, Phillip and Steven Puffer, Gordon and Norman Farrington and Gerald and Larry Platner. Mrs. Floyd Siver was vocalist.

Mr. Platner died April 28, 1968, at Mercy hospital, Cedar Rapids, following an illness of one year.

Mr. Platner was born July 20, 1886, the son of Catheus Fremont and Margaret Jane Ellison Platner. He was graduated from Mechanicsville high school and attended Cornell College, Mt. Vernon. He married the former Anna Hazel Miller at Lisbon Feb. 21, 1918. He was a veteran of World War I, serving in France with Company L of the 349th Infantry. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and the American Legion. He was a lifetime farmer and director of White Pigeon Insurance Association for a number of years. He and his wife resided at Platner's homestead, northwest of Mechanicsville until the fall of 1950 when they retired to their present residence in Mechanicsville.

He is survived by his wife and 4 children, Mrs. Donald (Edith) Puffer, Mrs. Robert (Arlene) Ross, Herbert and Mrs. Glenn (Helen) Farrington; 13 grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Mary Fry. He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter.
