Ernest Gaul Rites Are Held March 4

Last rites for Ernest O. Gaul, 65, Tipton businessman, were held March 4 at First United Church of Christ with the Rev. E. H. Lauer officiating. Burial was at Rose Hill cemetery, Mechanicsville, where Cedar Lodge AF & AM conducted graveside rites.

Pallbearers were Don Irey, Bill Agne, Gene Sissel, Ray Schwitzer, Don Young and Wayne Miller. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Agne and Mr. and Mrs. Max Nebergall were in charge of flowers.

Vocalists were Dr. C. D. Christianson, Don Thompson, Raymond Eiler and James Major. Mrs. Arnold Swan was organist.

Mr. Gaul died at Mercy hospital, Iowa City, March 1. He was hospitalized after he fell and fractured his hip. A heart attack was the cause of death.

The son of George and Lucy Pfarr Gaul, he was born Sept. 12, 1902, on a farm near Tipton. He was educated in the Tipton schools and a Davenport business college. He was married to Felma Herring at Mediapolis April 22, 1925. She died in 1934. He was married to Olive M. McCoy at Tipton March 17, 1951.

Mr. Gaul farmed near Tipton until 1947 when he went into the auto and implement business in Tipton. He sold the business to Lester Davis in 1966.

He was a member of the council of First United Church of Christ, a director of the First National bank, a member of Cedar Lodge AF & Am and the Tipton Rotary club.

He is survived by his wife, a son, Monte H., Tipton; 2 daughters, Mrs. Phillip (Darlene) Hambright, Bennett and Mrs. Louis (Margey) Grossen, Clarksville, Ind.; a stepson, Jerold McCoy, Clarendon Hills, Ill., and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Donald (Lois) Durow, Cedar Rapids; 15 grandchildren and 3 brothers, Ralph, Victor and Alba, all of Tipton.
