Verna A. Gortner was born into the home of John F. and Fannie Mary Gortner on September 13, 1898 in Clarence and died at the Green Square Nursing Home in Cedar Rapids on Monday, December 22, 1958, at the age of 60 years, three months and 9 days.

Verna had lived in the Clarence community all of her life, until three years ago when she entered the Green Square Nursing Home in Cedar Rapids where she might receive necessary care for her gradual weakening body.

She was educated in the schools of Clarence. It was to the Methodist Church that she worshiped God having united with this Church on March 18th, 1914. She came to love the Church and always showed a definite interest in the activities here as the Minister called on her from time to time.

She leaves to mourn her death two sisters, Mrs. Mary Workman, and Mrs. Naomi Yock both of Clarence, a niece and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by both parents.

Funeral services were held at the Chapman Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 24, 1958, with the service being conducted by Rev. Cyril Ashton of the Methodist Church. Music was furnished by Mrs. John Paul, soloist and Mrs. Robert Joslin, organist.

Interment was made in the Clarence cemetery.
