18 April 1940 - The Tipton Advertiser

William Robert Patterson was born in Red Oak township, Cedar county, Iowa, May 30, 1890, and passed away at his home in Tipton, April 11, 1940, at the age of 49 years, 10 months and 11 days. He lived in Red Oak township until he was ten or twelve years of age, when the family moved to Tipton. He engaged in various kinds of work. For many years he was in charge of the round house for the C. & N. W. Ry. Co. at Tipton.

On July 22, 1918, he entered the service of his country. He received an honorable discharge after six months' service. On his return from the Army he was engaged as a fireman for the Northwestern railroad. For many years he has been a loyal member of the Tipton Fire Department, the American Legion and the Loyal Order of Moose. His response to duty was always prompt.

Last July he became ill and reported at the Veterans' Hospital at Des Moines, for treatment, and was transferred to the Veterans' Hospital at Hines, Illinois, where he remained until November 1, after having submitted to a major operation. Since that time he has resided with his mother in Tipton.

He was of cheerful disposition, and leaves to mourn beside his mother and four cousins, a large circle of cherished friends.

Funeral rites were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Wilson Funeral Home in Tipton with the Rev. H. N. Poston, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, in charge. Burial was in the Red Oak Grove cemetery with military service conducted by members of Gary-Whalen American Legion Post of Tipton.
