Passes Away in Youth

William Henry Carl, the oldest son of Carl and Caroline Esbaum, was born December 26th, 1900, in Springfield township near Lowden, and was baptized on January 21st, 1901. He attended the Lutheran parochial school here and was confirmed March 28, 1915. Since his confirmation he has worked on farms near Lowden, of late for Herman Meier, northeast of town, where he was taken sick.

He had complained for some time previous and on Sunday, August 12th, he became worse and a physician was called. On Tuesday he was taken to St. Luke's hospital at Cedar Rapids, where an operation was performed for obstruction of the bowels Tuesday afternoon, but he passed away a few hours afterward, at the age of 16 years, 7 months and 19 days. His remains were brought to his home here the following morning.

Willie was a good Christian boy, kindhearted and of a good disposition, and it is sad, indeed, for one to be called away in young manhood with the brightest prospects for the future. The family and friends are brokenhearted, and while the affliction ** bear they must look to the Saviour for the consolation which he so freely gives.

Willie leaves to mourn his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Esbaum, two brothers and one sister. Funeral services were held last Friday afternoon at two o'clock at the home followed by services at the Lutheran Trinity church. Rev. J. H. Brammer officiated. The pall bearers were his classmates: Emil Hein, Louis Gade, Richard Licht, Carl Kruckenberg, August Meyer and Arnold Wenndt. The flower girls were Louise Licht, Alma Hein, Hulda Neiting and Alma Ernsting.
