Clark Smith was born in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada, on January 15, 1866. When a boy his parents came to the States. He attended Valpariso University in Indiana.

Having chosen the printers trade he worked on various papers before coming to Clarence in 1893. Here he formed the acquaintance of Anna Bixler who was in his employ. They were united in marriage in March 1893. In 1899 he sold his business here. He later owned the Colfax Tribune. In 1905 they moved to Des Moines where he operated a commercial printing establishment until he retired in 1922 from active business life.

Mrs. Smith passed away in July of this year. He had been in failing health and mind for some time. The end of life came to him early on November 10th, 1950.

He leaves one son Harold of Des Moines and two grandchildren, Richard and Shirley of Kansas City.

Funeral services were conducted from the Chapman Funeral Home on the afternoon of Sunday, November 12th by Gordon Smith. He was laid to rest in the Clarence cemetery.

Clark had a few relatives in this section of the state and they are: a niece, Mrs. Frank Miller and family and the family of the late C. H. Bixler, a nephew.

Pallbearers were Willard Russell, Glenn Tenley, Fred Phillips, J. E. Shriver, Homer Burgess and Robert Kelly. Mrs. Kelly and Mrs. Nelson Claney were in charge of the floral offerings.

Clark who was 84 years of age at his death sold The Clarence Sun fifty-three years ago to the present publisher Chas. A. Seaton. Being absent from Clarence so long now he was not very well known here in late years.
