When a tree that has been a familiar object is cut down we miss its place on the horizon for a time till we get accustomed to the change. So it is also with the passage of a familiar character in the community. It seems strange not to see them about. This is true in the case of Maurice Snider who was so well known in the Clarence community.
A native of Shelby county, Ohio, where he was born April 6, 1878, the son of David and Hannah Allen Snider. As a young man he went west to the Wenatchee Valley in Washington state where he worked in logging camps. Finding farm work more to his liking he drifted about finally settling in the Clarence community in 1903. About 30 years ago he bought a home in the east part of Clarence. His industry was familiar to all, no task was too difficult or disagreeable for him, doing ditching, cutting trees and corn picking for the resident of the community.
He was very observing particularly in the processes of nature and the ways of plants and trees. Kindhearted and likeable he attracted children. He also showed a knowledge of the Bible and meditated on religious matters. He was a member of the Methodist church.
He had slowed down in bodily vigor so that he was unable for the past two years to work but continued to be about. A heart ailment brought life to a sudden end for him as he was going up town from his home about noon on January 23rd, 1951.
He leaves a brother James O. Snider and a sister Mrs. H. S. Swiger of Anna, Ohio, a brother H. D. Snider of Wenatchee, Washington and nephews and nieces in Ohio and Washington state.
Funeral services were conducted from the Chapman Funeral Home on Thursday, January 25th, by Gordon Smith, U. J. Fike and A. D. Holtry. Music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Fike. He was laid to rest in the Clarence cemetery.
