4 March 1943 - The Clarence Sun
Mrs. Hans Klatt, nee Emma Marie Plate, daughter of the late Henry Plate and wife, Catherina, nee Benewitz, was born at Lowden, Iowa, November 26, 1897. She was baptized in infancy, and on Palm Sunday, 1912, was confirmed in Zion's Evangelical church at Lowden.
On the 18th day of June, 1918, she was married by Rev. J. Reichardt to Hans Klatt, who had enlisted and was at that time awaiting a call to enter the service of his country. Until this call came the young couple lived in Davenport. Since then they have been residents of the Clarence community.
Mrs. Klatt was devoted to her family, active in community affairs and could be depended upon to help in every time of need. She did many acts of kindness that no one but she, her God and the person to whom they were done, will ever know about. She was of a kind and sympathetic nature and cheerful in adversity. Her friends, not only in the Clarence community, but in the entire county were legion.
At the time of her departure she was president of the United Service Women's organization, a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Past Presidents Parley, the U.S.O. campaign and the Victory Book campaign, and various other civic affairs. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical and Reformed church and of the Mary and Martha Circle of the Women's Guild in that church.
For some time she had suffered an ailment that had necessitated an operation, and on February 10th she entered St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids from where however she was destined not to return. Since Saturday, February 20th, her condition became steadily more serious until the Almighty God in His wise providence relieved her of her suffering on the evening of February 24th, at 8:55. At the time of her departure Mrs. Klatt was 45 years, 2 months and 28 days of age.
Surviving her untimely death are her deeply grieved husband; three children, Henry, a Lieutenant in the armed forces, now stationed at Camp Claiborne, La.; Elaine and Duane at home; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Henry Klatt; three brothers, William of Stanwood; Herman of Crane, Texas; August of Charlotte, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Emily Pauls and Martha Plate, both of Lowden. Also a number of more distant relatives and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and one brother.
The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at St. John's church and were very largely attended. Reverend F. J. Mittler was in charge. The esteem in which the deceased was held was reflected in the large number of floral offerings which were in charge of Mrs. Ray Helt, Mrs. Charles Kembel, Mrs. Honora Decker, Miss Mildred Stock. The pall-bearers were Lester Kelly, Arnold Ruther, Henry Von Muenster, Wilmer Gehrls, George Miller, Lloyd Meyer. Interment followed in the Clarence cemetery.
