Pvt. Kenneth Burgess, 23, was drowned on Saturday, May 12th, while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico of Galveston, Texas, East beach. The body was recovered on Monday on the beach.
Kenneth along with two of his army buddies from Camp Hood, Texas, were on a weekend pass. His two friends were Pvt. Dewey Dircks, 24, of Clarence and Pvt. Gene Meyer of Lowden. Burgess drowned when he got out too far and could not be reached by his two pals who were swimming with him.
Kenneth is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lucien Burgess, farmers living between Stanwood and Clarence.
He was born April 19, 1926, and was graduated from the class of 1946. He entered the army in December, 1950, and after processing at Fort Sheridan was stationed at Camp Hood.
In addition to his parents he is survived by nine brothers and three sisters.
His body is being returned by air today, and is accompanied by Pvt. Myron Conrad of Lowden.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at the Chapman Funeral Home at 1:30 and at the Clarence Methodist church at 2:00 with services conducted by Rev. A. D. Holtry. Burial will be made in the Stanwood cemetery. This will be a Military Funeral.
