John R. Claney, "Non" as he was familiarly known was a lifelong resident of this community. the son of James and Harriet Claney, he was born in Holmes County, Ohio, September 29, 1866. The family came to Iowa in 1869. Shortly after they arrived here the mother died. His grandmother then took over until her death when the sister Ella took the place of the mother in the home. He grew to manhood on the farm three miles north and 2 miles west of Clarence which was henceforth to be his home the active years of his life with his sister Ella who was a faithful companion for many years until her death in 1946.
Having prospered they retired to town building a home in 1918.
Mr. Claney had an exceptionally well balanced kindly disposition. He treated everyone kindly and justly. He was for several years a director of the old First National Bank where he helped to guide its affairs thro a perilous time. In his business dealings his integrity and fairness impressed all with whom he came in contact. He was a faithful member of the Presbyterian church as long as it existed.
The infirmities of age took their toll of mind and body making him in his later years an object of considerable care. He passed peacefully from this life on April 29, 1951, at the age of 84 years, 7 months and 25 days.
One brother, Frank Claney of California survives besides nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at the Chapman Funeral Home at 2 P.M. on Tuesday May 1st, with the service conducted by Gordon Smith. The music was furnished by Anna Klatt and Dorothy Claney accompanied by Mrs. Helen Lane. Pallbearers were Robert Kelly, Lester Kelly, J. E. Shriver, Ernest Hasselbusch, Walter Kemmann and Howard Claney.
He was laid to rest by his sister in the Clarence cemetery.
