JERRY SHEY, 83, PASSES AWAY THIS MORNING, WIOTA

Wiota—Jerry M. Shey, 83, passed away at his home in Wiota at 3:20 o’clock this morning just one week after he and Mrs. Shey had observed their sixtieth wedding anniversary. He had been seriously ill for the past three weeks.

A native of Selena, Ill., where he was born on Oct. 15, 1860, he came to Cass county with his parents, Daniel and Katherine McCarthy Shey, who farmed north of Atlantic for a time and then moved to a farm near Massena. Forty-nine years ago Mr. Shey moved to a farm south of Wiota and resided there until he retired to Wiota in 1930.

He was married in Atlantic on Feb. 21, 1884, to Lydia Malone, who survives him. Four daughters, Mrs. Winnie Barrett, of Omaha, Mrs. Esther Franz, Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Valda Ehrman and Mrs. Anna McMahon of Wiota, and two sons, Dan, of Red Oak, and Howard, of Council Bluffs, survive him. There are twelve grandchildren. A son-in-law, Maj. Williard [Willard] Franz, is in Australia. One son Francis, died in infancy, and a daughter, Bertha Frances Shey, passed away Dec. 15, 1935.

Funeral services will be held at ten Wednesday morning from the Wiota Catholic church, of which he was a member. The Rev. Father M. J. O’Connor will officiate and interment will be made in the Atlantic Catholic cemetery.

Rosary will be said tonight and Tuesday evening at nine o’clock at the home in Wiota, where he will remain until the time of service.

ATLANTIC – Funeral services for Jerry M. Shey, 83, pioneer Cass resident, who died at his home in Wiota Monday will be held Wednesday morning from the Wiota Catholic church. The Rev. M. J. O’Connor will officiate and burial will be in the Atlantic cemetery.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Willie Barrett of Omaha, Mrs. Esther Franz, Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Valda Ehrman and Mrs. Anna McMahon of Wiota; two sons, Dan of Red Oak and Howard of Council Bluffs and 12 grandchildren.
